A suburb of the capital region, found just 8 miles northwest of Denver, the city of Arvada, Colorado, is the eighth most populous city in the state. It is split among Jefferson and Adams counties, and is home to a population estimated at around 107,000, as of 2007. The city covers more than 22,000 acres, with approximately 1,600 of that available for industrial and commercial development. The city is home to College Arvada.
Arvada is just west of Regis University and Willis Case Regis Golf Course, and east of Stenger Soccer Complex and Harold D Lutz Sports Complex and Red Rocks Community. In its early agricultural days, the city claimed the title as the "Celery Capital of the World." The Amtrak rail's California Zephyr sweeps through the city twice a day, in the morning and at night. For transportation, the Denver area's Regional Transportation District operates seven local bus routes, seven express bus routes and the CC regional bus route within Arvada. The operator plans to begin a commuter rail service in the city by 2015. For national and international travel, commercial air connections can be made at Denver International Airport and Rocky Mountain Metropolitan Airport.
The city's historic district, Olde Town Arvada, is littered with boutiques and shops for unique shopping experiences, or try the Arvada Marketplace. The Arvada Center for the Arts and Humanities offers programs year-round, ranging from concerts, theatrical performances, artistic exhibits and various classes. The city operates more than 140 parks with more than 2,000 acres of parks, lakes and open space. West Woods Golf Club, Lake Arbor Golf Club and Indian Tree Golf Course provide golfers plenty of options.
Annual events celebrated in Arvada include the Chocolate Affair, Arvada Kite Festival, Arvada Trails Day, Gold Strike Festivals, Harvest Festival, Festival of Scarecrows and a Fourth of July celebration. Majestic View Nature Center and Community Park offers education opportunities with a 3,000-square-foot nature center. Enjoy a day at nearby Lakeside Amusement Park or explore the outdoors at Two Ponds National Wildlife Refuge.
