The third largest city by population in the state, Aurora, Colorado, is located in Arapahoe and Adams Counties. The city's population, estimated to be nearly 300,000 as of 2007 estimates, is enough to make it one of the 60 largest cities in the U.S. Aurora is one of the principal cities of the Denver-Aurora Metropolitan Statistical Area, which has almost 2.5 million residents combined. Aurora, with more than 300 days of sunshine a year, sits at an elevation of nearly 5,500 feet above seal level and encompasses and area of 151 square miles.

The town was begun in 1891, and was a small community in the time leading up to World War II, although it was noted as being the site of the Fitzsimons Army Hospital, where wounded would be taken during World War I. The hospital has since been decommissioned and refashioned as a one-mile health and biology hub, with the University of Colorado Hospital and Health Sciences Center, Rocky Mountain Lions Eye Institute, the Nighthorse Campbell Native Health Building, Research Complex I and Colorado Bioscience Park Aurora all now packed into the area. The city is also the site of the Buckley Air Force Base.

Aurora is home to seven golf courses, including Aurora Hills Golf Course, John F Kennedy Golf Course, Los Verdes Country Club and Heather Ridge Golf Course. Shopping is available at Aurora Mall and Buckingham Square Mall. The city is just north of Cherry Creek State Park, and is also home to the five-acre leash-free Grandview Dog Park as well as more than 100 local restaurants of all regions and tastes of the world.

The city celebrates its arts, with The Aurora Symphony Orchestra and Aurora Fox Arts Center, which offers performances, classes and workshops throughout the year. Cherry Creek Public Schools and Aurora Public Schools serve school-aged children in the area, with Community College of Aurora offering furthering education and other degree opportunities.
