Adams County Real Estate
The fifth most populous of the 64 counties of the state, Adams County, Colorado, is home to nearly 415,000 residents, a figure that has seen steady growth in recent years. The county's population has risen nearly 14 percent since the 2000 census, as those working in Denver, Aurora and other cities choose to move further out of the cities into the surrounding areas. The county is located in northern Colorado, just east of the state's capital. The county was named after Alva Adams, the governor of Colorado through much of the late 1800s and into the early 20th century. It got its beginnings as many of northern Colorado's cities did, during the gold rush when settlers came hoping to strike it rich. The first residents settled on an island in the South Platte River, about seven miles from where Brighton is today located.
Brighton is Adams County's seat, and was the county's first incorporated city in 1887. Other notable cities in the county include Arvada, Aurora, Bennett, Commerce City, Federal Heights, Northglenn, Thornton and Westminster. The county is made up of an area of nearly 1,200 square miles, and is considered a part of the Denver-Aurora Metropolitan Statistical Area.
The county surrounds most of Denver International Airport, giving its residents easy access to commercial flights in and out of the city. Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Wildlife Refuge passes through the county, and is a popular spot for those looking to enjoy the beautiful Colorado weather with a hike along one of the many recreational trails or a picnic. Nearby Riverdale Golf offers a place to relax and enjoy a few rounds.
